The Untold Risk of Letting AI Run Your Freelance Business
One of my Flourishing Freelancer members said something that caught my attention a few months ago...
"I feel like I'm just scratching the surface of what AI can do."
It honestly surprised me. This member is all over AI. She knows Claude as a cheerleader and motivator, bounces ideas off of Claude for lead magnets, and asks Claude for advice on writing anything...
But there’s a danger to AI when we rely on it too much .
While I’ve seen it be extremely helpful and it’s helped me immensely with my marketing, I’ve begun to notice a trend where it falls extremely short in two areas:
Structuring pricing packages
Helping get to the soul of your business
Regarding #1 - AI is excellent at creating packages of your services. However, it’s not good at differentiating between packages on a convincing level with buyer psychology. It prices a bunch of services with a number that is often ludicrously high and will leave the client scratching their heads on why they should pay $7000 for services that another freelancer offers for $700.
Regarding #2 - the heart and soul of your business is you. You’re not a large company. You are a freelancer or consultant looking to create a life of your dreams. When new students come onboard into my program, I have them go through a UVP worksheet, and often, they need to redo it 2-3x because I want them to get deeper into how they are unique, their experiences, and where they stand out. When students use AI (which is almost everyone nowadays), AI can bring up the commonalities of services, but it doesn’t help get deeper on the soft skills. It’s impossible, because AI doesn’t have your past to dig into. And your past, what made you who you are, is the soul of your business and that is what will attract one client to you over others.
Truth is, I’m very pro-AI. Heck, I just co-hosted a workshop on how to use AI for marketing last month.
But it won’t help you succeed in business. It can’t (at this point). It’s missing way too many small details of how to use psychology in running a business, which is where you come in.
Hope this gave you some food for thought.
