Why Entrepreneurship Can’t Be Taught—And What Really Makes a Business Successful
I was reading about entrepreneurship courses the other day when I looked up and thought,
"Wait, since when can you teach someone how to be an entrepreneur in a classroom?
Here’s the truth: most entrepreneurs have very… boring businesses. (Myself included.) Online, we often try to hype things up and make it look flashy, but the reality? Most of the time, it’s not a path to Nike partnerships, multi-million-dollar yachts, or nine months living in Bali. Sorry if that disappoints you.
To me, being an entrepreneur isn’t something you can learn from a textbook or lecture. It requires innate traits—things you’re born with or not.
The Difference Between Struggling and Thriving Entrepreneurs
After coaching many freelancers, I can usually tell who will struggle and who will succeed. The ones who struggle? They follow every direction I give but can’t get creative with them. It’s like following a recipe—the meal is fine, but it’s never extraordinary, and they’ll rarely make it again.
The successful ones? They mix creativity with ambition. They grind when needed but also find joy in the ride. They have that little instinct that says:
"Kiri, I see what you’re saying, I’ll use it—but I’m also going to trust my gut and do it my way."
When I see a student do that, it lights me up. I know their passion and intuition are guiding how they build their business. I’m the lighthouse; my students are the ship. And that spark? That can’t be taught.
Why Passion and Intuition Matter More Than Courses
You can read all the business books in the world. You can take every entrepreneurship course available in college. But without that intrinsic spark, the joy, the obsession, the willingness to take risks, you won’t truly succeed.
Entrepreneurship is about:
Passion
Obsessiveness
Risk-taking
Picking yourself up over and over again
Intrinsic motivation
Complete joy in what you do
If you have that? Welcome to entrepreneurship.
