Build Your Business from Inspiration, Not Desperation
Back when I used to interview 7-figure women entrepreneurs on my podcast, someone said something that completely stuck with me:
“It’s better to build a business from inspiration, than desperation.”
I’m not usually one to talk about manifesting and visualization—I’m more of a hardcore, nuts-and-bolts, facts-and-education type when it comes to building a business. But I’ve come to realize that if you want to truly come into inspiration, you can’t do it without letting your imagination run wild.
Why Imagination Matters
I’ve always had a vivid imagination. People have told me that since I was young. I can put myself in completely different worlds, create stories only I know with dragons and magic, and imagine myself outside of this reality. (Honestly, it’s probably a coping mechanism—some people turn to alcohol or drugs; I escape to a fantasy world 🤷♀️.)
But there’s no better way to visualize your business and take your first steps than letting your imagination play freely.
Sometimes I imagine people interviewing me about my business, asking how I got started and found success. Other times, I dream about being a keynote speaker, empowering women, or seeing my business grow in ways I hadn’t imagined before. Right now, I have an income goal I’m visualizing. When I reach it, I picture taking my family on a long weekend in Florida, renting a convertible, and driving along the shoreline in Miami having an absolute blast.
This is what inspiration feels like. It fuels excitement, passion, and obsession with your work. When you tap into that energy, everything else—the mundane tasks, the distractions—take a backseat.
Inspiration vs. Desperation
I’ve been thinking about this a lot because I have two people in my Flourishing Freelancer program who are in the “desperation” stage of building a business—they just need income.
I get it. I support it. And I’m coaching them toward fast-tracking revenue. But I truly believe the universe rewards us when we’re excited and transformed by our business, rather than just seeing it as a means to an end.
So, how can you build your business from inspiration instead of desperation?
3 Steps to Build From Inspiration
Step 1: Find what lights you up.
What excites you about your business? If you’re just using your skills because that’s all you know, it will feel like a job, and it will be hard to sustain the thrill you need.
Step 2: Visualize your North Star.
Think about the end goal—where you want to be when you reach stability and success. Imagine yourself there. What feelings does it bring up? What are you wearing? How’s your hair done? (Yes, little details like that matter.)
Step 3: Take actionable steps today.
Identify three steps you can do today to move closer to your goal. There will always be more tasks than you can handle, so focus on what actually generates income and moves the needle for your business.
